iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 comparison of hands-on reviews

For years, choosing a book-style foldable meant choosing Samsung. That changed this week, and iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 is now the foldable matchup everyone is asking about. Apple’s iPhone Duo opened for preorders on October 16 and arrives in stores on October 23, priced just $100 above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Spec sheets only tell you so much about a phone you fold dozens of times a day. So instead of repeating them, we read the hands-on reports from reviewers who’ve held both phones and put their impressions side by side. Where they agree, we say so. Where they disagree (and on the crease, they really do), we show you both sides.

iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8: the quick answer

  • Choose the iPhone Duo if you’re already on iPhone, want the sturdiest-feeling hinge, and care about water and dust protection.
  • Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if you want a lighter, thinner phone, prefer to run three apps at once, and want the lower price.

Where reviewers agree

The iPhone Duo’s hinge is the best part. Android Authority, writing as a long-time Android user, said it holds firmly at any angle, while the Fold 8 is happiest fully open or fully closed. Neoteo also described the hinge as smooth, stable and balanced. If you plan to use your foldable half-open as a mini laptop or a hands-free video call stand, this matters.

The Duo is heavy. At 254g, it’s heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Neoteo called it a substantial phone you’ll notice in a pocket and during long one-handed use. Android Authority was more forgiving, saying the weight sits nicely in the palm and actually made the phone feel more drop-proof. Still, the Fold 8’s 201g is a big difference you’ll feel every day.

Neither phone is a zoom champion. Both skip a dedicated telephoto lens. On the Duo, the 2x option comes from cropping the main sensor. TechRadar noted the Fold 8’s 4x and 10x presets lose quality. If you photograph your kids’ sports games or concerts from far away, a regular flagship phone will serve you better.

Samsung still wins at multitasking. The Fold 8 runs up to three apps side by side. The Duo is limited to two. Mark Ellis said two apps were plenty for him, but Neoteo called it far less flexible than Samsung’s options. Power users who live in split-screen should note this.

Where reviewers disagree: the iPhone Duo crease

This is the most debated question about the iPhone Duo, and the honest answer is that it depends on who you ask and how you look at it.

  • “Practically invisible” camp: Android Authority said the crease was very hard to see head-on. Mark Ellis called it one of the least noticeable creases he’d seen. MacRumors reported it was better hidden than on Samsung’s latest Fold models.
  • “It’s still there” camp: a later TechRadar analysis found a visible dip when the screen was tilted under bright light, and 9to5Google said it looked roughly as prominent as the Fold 8’s crease.

Most reviewers credit Apple’s matte nano-texture coating, which hides reflections where creases usually show. The trade-off, according to Android Authority, is that colors can look slightly washed out compared with a glossy screen. And as Geek Slop points out, every demo so far used brand-new phones. The real verdict on how the crease ages will come from owners after months of daily use.

Where reviewers disagree: can it replace an iPad mini?

Mark Ellis thinks the Duo could replace both an iPhone and an iPad mini for heavy tablet users. Neoteo disagrees, saying it isn’t a general iPad mini replacement and is only worth the price if you’ll open it often. Our read: if you mostly read, take notes and review documents on your iPad mini, the Duo can probably replace it. If you watch a lot of video or draw, keep the iPad.

The small things reviewers flagged on the iPhone Duo

  • The squared corners on the hinge side may dig into your palm over time (Android Authority)
  • The under-display selfie camera on the inner screen is visible and soft, better for video calls than photos
  • The right-edge controls on the outer screen are hard to reach one-handed
  • There’s no Action button, so muting quickly takes another route
  • It’s eSIM-only, so you can’t swap in a physical SIM card when traveling

And on the Galaxy Z Fold 8

  • TechRadar found the display hard to read in direct sunlight
  • The price gap to the more premium Z Fold 8 Ultra is small, which can make the standard model feel like an awkward middle choice
  • Battery life lasted between one and one-and-a-half days of mixed use in TechRadar’s testing

Our verdict: the best foldable phone of 2026 for you

The iPhone Duo has the better build, and reviewers consistently came away impressed by its hinge. But the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is lighter, cheaper and more flexible for multitasking. If you’re an iPhone user who has waited years for a foldable, the Duo is the one to get. Just try it in a store first, because 254g isn’t for everyone. If you’re open to Android, the Fold 8 remains the more practical everyday foldable.

We’ll update this comparison as full reviews and owner feedback arrive after launch.
